Under city law the bikes must be sold, destroyed, or donated to an overseas charity once the city has them in their possession. The article states that the city is selling the bikes to scrapyards to be destroyed. This seems like a total waste of a vehicle and the city is not maximizing the money it could be generating from the sales by selling them at scrap prices. It makes me wonder about how efficient the city is when it disposes surplus property. Someone should look into that.
If I were in charge of disposing of these bikes I would contact a rural jurisdiction far away from Baltimore (to ensure that we never see them again on our streets) and offer to sell them the functioning bikes. We live in a throw away society but this is ridiculous. These definitely is demand for these bikes in rural areas and Baltimore should maximize it's profit from these street nuisances.
