Ways To Save Tax Dollars

May 29, 11:32 PM

Today we found out that because of high fuel costs our water bills will be going up 4%. They always find some excuse to raise our water bills.  I get the most random water bills sometimes. I really believe that sometimes they just make up your water bill.  It is just another factor in the cost of living in Baltimore.  Since fuel prices are driving up the price of just about everything I thought of ways to save fuel and cut costs before the City tells us they have to raise our taxes.

Currently we have our trash picked up twice a week and our recycling picked up twice a month. Many major cities only have trash picked up once a week.  It takes a lot of fuel to make those trucks run.  What if we only had trash pickup once a week?  The City would save a lot on gas and on paying trash workers.  People would be forced to recycle.   Those who already do not keep a clean trash area would have a messier trash area.  I have a solution to this.  Increase the enforcement and fines on outrageously trashy backyards (do not pick on people with minor violations).  If owners do not pay the fines then send police to the area.  I guarantee you that at and around most of the houses with disgusting backyards, other more serious illegal activity is openly going on.  Let one quality of life issue be a gateway in to busting people on real issues.  At the end of the day you have a safer city.

It would also be nice if city employees were allowed to work four ten-hour work days at their regular hourly rate.  Employees would be happier and in theory more efficient.  They would have less of their income go to gas.  Nearby dinner establishments would have more customers.  I think a lot of city employees illegally use their city owned cars so there would be less fuel consumption by those vehicles also.

In the winter it is so warm in most city owned buildings downtown.  Lower the temperature five degrees and we could probably cut the property tax rate by at least a penny.

Random Tuesday Thoughts

At most community meetings I attend people like to bring up their desire for more foot patrols by police.   With $5 gas on the horizon the police department could save a lot of money and make a lot of people happier by taking police out of... Read More

How $5 Gas Can Help Baltimore

May 15, 11:26 PM
The City and the citizens of Baltimore need to plan for later this summer when gas hits $5 a gallon.  A few weekends ago when running in Baltimore I noticed three city-owned vehicles idling when they should have been turned off.  Baltimore... Read More
