The following email from Bill Henry is floating around cyberspace. I thought I would share it:
"I am writing to ask you to support my Confiscated Assets for Neighborhoods (CAN) grant program bill, which is currently being considered by the City Council’s Judiciary Committee, chaired by Councilman Jim Kraft. A copy of the bill itself can be found on-line here:
Here’s an excerpt from the May 14th issue of The City Paper,
describing the bill:
“When city police arrest drug dealers and seize assets, the money goes into one of two pots. Seizures worth more than $2,000 go into a federal government program that in turn funds law-enforcement activities. Seizures of cash and prizes worth less than $2,000 go, after the court case is over, to the city's general fund. It is this second pot of money - some $200,000 per year, according to police spokesman Sterling Clifford - that this bill addresses. Under 4th District Councilman Bill Henry's plan, neighborhood groups could compete for the money, which would be doled out by the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice. The city's boodle would be divided according to police districts, with asset seizures in each district being returned to neighborhood groups within those districts.”
If you’re a member of the Police Community Relations Council for your police district then you should be especially interested – each district’s CRC will be responsible for prioritizing the grant requests from the neighborhoods in their district, before the requests are sent downtown to the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice for processing.
While a letter of support – either from an individual or an association – is always appreciated, the best way to show your support is to come down in person and testify in favor of the legislation at the bill’s public hearing. That hearing will be held next Monday, December 1st at 5pm in the City Council Chambers on the 4th floor of City Hall.
If you’re interested in sending something in writing and would like a template, copies of supportive agency reports can be found on-line here and here. I hope you can come. Thanks!
- Bill"
