A sad fact about Baltimore police officers

December 2, 8:23 AM

Last night I was speaking with a veteran Baltimore police officer. Baltimore residents often wonder why some police officers seem to be so friendly with some drug dealers. There have been instances where residents of my neighborhood have witnessed officers joking around with known drug dealers. The officer I spoke to last night told me that in the central district they tried to hire city residents as officers. In order to hire city residents they had to lower standards and thus they let in some characters with less than stellar backgrounds. Some of these individuals grew up with the drug dealers and remain friends with them.

The policy of hiring officers from the community sounds great in theory and in campaign speeches, but in practice it can be very dangerous and lead to corruption of the police force if standards are lowered just to maintain a hiring quota of city residents.
