Abyssinia restaurant has such an authentic Ethiopian atmosphere that a visit can make you forget you are still in Raleigh, NC. The scene is very cultured with Ethiopian flags and other items on the wall including a picture of the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie on the wall.

There is a comfort level here that feels as if one has walked into someone's home and not a place of business. The hostess and wait staff are considerate and very attentive without being pushy. Conversation over dinner is expected and not rushed. Most tables are set up for two people at a small, round table just big enough for a plate from which both people share. This is another aspect of Abyssinia that makes the experience such an intimate one.

However, there are also settings for 3, 6 or more. For the vegetarian, variety abounds with spicy lentils, saucy collard greens and cabbage. Beef and lamb are sauteed and simmered in various sauces and served atop injera. Injera bread, a flat bread with a taste reminiscent of sourdough is served with every meal as a means to handle the food. Silverware is not required for this journey. An adventure to this place means going beyond the ordinary dining experience and satisfying the taste for something different. Dinner is accompanied by reggae music played quietly in the background.

On the weekend, the tables are removed and the restaurant also doubles as a nightclub. A dj spins reggae, dancehall, soca, and other rhythms from the African diaspora. The restaurant is often packed on a Saturday night where many international residents seeking the sounds of home make their way to Abyssinia for a night of high energy dance and soulful sounds. Between the food, the inviting atmosphere, the pleasant service, and a place to party on Saturday night - there are enough reasons to keep customers returning for more.

Abyssinia is located at 2109 Avent Ferry Road, Raleigh N.C. For more information contact:(919) 664-8151
