Ever since members of the Lenni Lenape tribe became the first visitors to Absecon Island (where Atlantic City is located today), people have been enjoying the benefits of the fresh sea-air. When the Boardwalk (always capitalized in Atlantic City) was built in 1870, a walk along this new "footpath" became quite popular.
Rolling chairs, introduced in the late 1880's, were a luxurious way for vacationers to take a scenic tour of the Boardwalk.
Today the rolling chairs are still here, a fun and nostalgic alternative to walking. They're a great way to travel from one casino to another, and as an added benefit, the wicker chairs have a canopy that protects riders from the hot sun.
It's easy to flag a rolling chair down. You can find them anywhere along the Boardwalk. Or check the casino Boardwalk entrances and the entrance to the Pier at Caesars where the drivers congregate.
The chairs operate year-round. Rates are charged per block, and it's advisable to count the blocks to be sure you are charged correctly. It's customary to tip the driver.
