Ever since Twilight came onto the book scene people have renewed their interest in all things that go bump in the night. Walk into any Borders or Barnes and Noble and just see for yourself. There are tables filled with teen vampire novels along with Twilight notebooks, candy, DVDs, gift sets, etc. Thank goodness someone realized the need for grown-up vampire novels, even though the Sookie Stackhouse novels were published almost five years before the Twilight books.
If you have avoided picking up one of these novels by Charlaine Harris, at least get a taste by reading the first in the nine book series, Dead Until Dark. The heroine, Sookie Stackhouse, really has bad luck when it comes to meeting people, especially men. That is until she meets Bill at the bar where she works, Merlotte's. Through a series of unlucky and sometimes supernatural events, Sookie's physical, mental, and emotional boundaries and strengths are tested. Sookie becomes involved with many different types of supernatural groups; from vampires and werewolves, to witches and faeries.
Luckily for readers, it is pretty easy to pick up any novel and be brought up to speed. The thoughtful Ms. Harris includes plenty of review of past events and relationships tucked into each novel. Another great thing about these fun and quick reads is that they interest a wide variety of genre fans. Each novel seems to have a bit of murder mystery, fantasy, romance, and action all twisted into a neat story line with few loose ends to confuse the reader.
