Less than one week away from arriving in its homeport of Fort Everglades, FL, the largest cruise ship in the world, Oasis of the Seas, continues to make headlines. The 225,282- ton cruise vessel is nearly 50% larger than the largest cruise ship in operation, and has many amenities that have never been seen on a cruise ship before. Some include: an exhilarating zip- line that races 9 decks above the open-air atrium complete with live trees, a family-friendly amusement area and theme park, an outdoor AquaTheater for water shows and a moving bar! Yes, that's right; Oasis of the Seas is offering the first ever moving bar at sea. The Rising Tide Bar will slowly ascend and descend 3 decks, allowing passengers to move through different areas on the ship while sipping cocktails and munching on appetizers. Need I say more?
This grand vessel was first ordered in 2006, and was completed, turned over to Royal Caribbean and departed from Turku, Finland on October 28, 2009. Oasis is nearly five times bigger than the Titanic, and is able to accommodate 6,360 passengers and 2,160 crew members. The cruise ships boasts an impressive 2,700 cabins, 28 multi- level loft suites complete with floor to ceiling windows, 4 swimming pools, an amphitheater, a golf course, basketball court and an ice rink; all within the 16 extraordinary decks of the ship. This global cruise liner has also developed seven different neighborhood concepts within the ship. They are: Central Park (highlighted link shows pics of each 'neighborhood'), The Pool and Sports Zone, Boardwalk, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Royal Promenade, Youth Zone and Entertainment Place, And despite its size, the ship is environmentally friendly, using 25% less power than other operating cruise lines.
The ship will make its 4- day maiden voyage on December 1, from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Labadee, Haiti. Soon after, the Oasis will begin sailing 7- night Eastern Caribbean destinations with scheduled port stops in St. Thomas, St. Maarten and Nassau. However, by mid 2010, Oasis will alternate its Eastern Caribbean routes with Western Caribbean routes that have included port calls of Cozumel, Mexico, Costa Maya, Mexico and Fallmouth, Jamaica.
