If you find yourself in a new place and are having trouble getting your bearings, or you want to learn more about the history of the town you are visiting, a tour is the way to go. Most tours are budget friendly, as well as informational, and Richmond has one to appeal to every interest throughout the entire year.
This season Historic Richmond Tours, through the Valentine History Center, offers lots of opportunities to get out there and learn about the city. On Saturdays (10-11:30 am) and Sundays (2-4 pm) in November you can meet them in Hollywood Cemetery. For $10, you’ll learn about the cemetery’s history, symbolism, design, and residents. Famous writers, generals, and even two presidents are buried there.
If you are feeling the need for a little speed, participate in the Segway tour on November 21st. On that Saturday from 12-2 pm, they invite you to experience the neighborhood of Jackson Ward. While riding on a Segway, you’ll learn about its collection of pre-civil war homes, and rich history saturated in fascinating African American culture.
Historic Richmond Tours has a tour to get you in the holiday spirit as well. On December 26h and 27th from 6 - 7:30 take a stroll down Monument Ave to see the houses decorated for the holidays with garlands, and glittering lights. While enjoying the scenery the tour guide will fill you in on the history of the houses and statues on this impressive street. Make sure to bring your own flashlight.
If you love a good movie more than a tour with a history lesson, then you'll really enjoy a group experience with 2006 Muse Award winner Virginia Film Tours. In a group of 4 or more get an insiders look at how a long list of Hollywood films were made right in Richmond. Some of the tours highlights are visiting locations for the movies Cold Mountain, The Contender, Hannibal, and Evan Almighty, and learning where movie stars over the years have stayed throughout the city.
