This time of year, you may find yourself getting sick more often. The holiday’s can be stressful and a lot of times with so much stress, we forget to take proper care of ourselves. There are some simple things that you can do during the holiday season to help prevent illness.

  • Get plenty of sleep. The amount of sleep a person needs varies from person to person. On average, an adult needs anywhere from seven to nine hours of sleep each day.
  •  Eat a healthy breakfast. It’s important not to skip breakfast because that can cause your blood level to drop before lunch time which means that you’re more likely to want to snack on some not-so-healthy foods that are high in sugar. There are many good breakfast options. There are even simple Immune Support Breakfast recipes.
  • Keep up with exercise. Holiday’s are time for fun and relaxing, but slacking off on the exercise can cause problems later on. Find ways to fit exercise in and make exercise fun! Sometimes having a friend to go for a run with or visit the gym with can motivate you further. The YMCA of Montgomery has low price memberships and many class options.
  • Eat with mindfulness. It’s common to overact during the holidays without giving it a second thought, but practicing mindful eating can help reduce some of that. This can also teach you a lot about your eating habits in general.
  • Before Thanksgiving dinner, eat a small, healthy snack. If you go to the table very hungry, you're more likely to eat more quickly, and end up overeating.
  • Try some stress relieving activities. Just take some time out for yourself to do something you enjoy. Some people find meditation and deep breathing to be very helpful, too.
