Two separate roadwork projects may make your commute to Midway Airport a mess over the next week or so. Railroad repair has Cicero Avenue closed north of I-55 (the Stevenson), and more construction continues on Cicero near the airport itself.
Roadwork crews plan to have Cicero Avenue closed in both directions from just north of I-55 to Pershing Rd. (39th Street) until next Sunday November 8th. The closure is due to railroad track repair on Cicero just north of Pershing. This construction has made a mess of traffic on several roads.
First of all, I-55 has been much heavier than normal on the Central Ave. and Pulaski Rd. Exits since drivers cannot go northbound on Cicero from the Stevenson Expressway. In addition, the railroad repair has caused major gridlock on westbound Pershing Rd. between Cicero and Central. Finally, Central Avenue has been jammed in both directions near I-55 since commuters are using Central instead of Cicero. Therefore, I would suggest Pulaski Rd. or even Harlem Ave. as your alternates to Cicero and Central Avenues.
As if that's not enough, the hits just keep on coming! Cicero Avenue construction continues in both directions between 59th Street and 74th Street, which is the Cicero bridge just north of Ford City. Crews have one lane down on northbound Cicero from 74th to 59th Street. This closure has caused bumper to bumper traffic on northbound Cicero north of 79th street as folks make their way to Midway. Use Pulaski north to 59th Street west instead.
Southbound Cicero also has one lane down from 59th to 63rd. Again, look for heavier than normal traffic on southbound Cicero approaching Midway. If you jump on Pulaski Rd south to 59th Street west, you will save a lot of time heading to the airport.
