

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A Taliban spokesman giving only his first name as Omar, claimed responsibility for a suicide bomber who blew himself up today, Sunday, Nov. 8 at a livestock market in northwest Pakistan.
Mayor Abdul Malik was the target of the bomber. Malik was killed by the blast after a man walked up to him at the market and detonated his vest of explosives, killing Malik and 11 other people, including a young girl. Twenty-five other people were also wounded, several of them critically.
The suicide bomber was Identified by officials as a young man thought to be in his early 20’s. The bomber was reportedly shouting "God is great!" — a traditional Islamic utterance when in danger.
According to the head of the Peshawar Police Department, Liaqat Khan, Malik publicly opposed the Taliban. Kahn said Malik was central to the resistance effort against the Taliban in the area and considers his death to be a blow to the government efforts to fight the militants.
Malik had reportedly been a Taliban supporter but later switched sides creating an anti-Taliban militia and had reportedly survived several attacks on his life recently.
Omar, the Taliban commander said Malik was interfering in his matters by setting up a militia which was supporting the killings of his men. He said he would kill anyone who tried to create an anti-Taliban militia.
