President Barack Obama ordered flags fly at half-staff here and at U.S. installations around the world through today and Nov. 11, which is Veteran’s Day.
The President's order comes one day after the deadly attack at the Ft. Hood Texas Army post. Obama said the tribute is both for the 13 people killed at Ft. Hood and to honor U.S. servicemen and women who have fallen around the world.
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates declared a moment of silence for U.S. military forces worldwide as a show of respect for the Fort Hood victims at 1:34 p.m. today, exactly 24 hours after the shooting.
Thirteen people were killed and 30 others injured in the shooting rampage at Fort Hood on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009. The suspected shooter is Army Psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan; his motive remains unclear.
Obama made a statement in the Rose Garden this morning that would have otherwise been devoted to the economy. "We don't know all the answers yet," Obama said. "I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts. What we do know is that there are families, friends and an entire nation grieving right now for the valiant men and women who came under attack yesterday."
