Mexico City, Mexico - The Mexico City Attorney general's office said police have detained three doctors, a nurse and a receptionist who are being accused of stealing newborn babies at a private hospital and selling them.

Also detained is a couple and a single woman who bought two babies and registered them as their own children.
The buyers said they had been deceived and had paid around $US1000 ($1100) each for the babies and their documents.

Luis Genero Vasquez, from the capital’s attorney general’s office reported the suspects told the mothers that their babies had died.

Vanesa Guzman was reunited with her biological daughter, Diana yesterday.  Authorities who found the baby confirmed her identity through genetic tests.

The medical workers were accused of child trafficking, using fake documents and organized crime,Vasquez said.  Authorities temporarily closed the hospital and are investigating further reports of stolen babies.  All the suspects were charged with trafficking in minors, using false documents and organized crime.
