Colorado University in Boulder acknowledges spike in journalism major
Colorado University in Boulder saw an
unusual spike in students seeking news-ed journalism degrees in February. News-editorial is especially popular for students who want to go into newspaper writing.
This is surprising to the university since Rocky Mountain News shut down in the same month. But like most careers that are threatened by the economy, journalism has to evolve in order to battle the recession.
Students are learning about other areas in journalism like recording video and audio, editing the footage down them selves and embedding it online. Classes are now being taught in multimedia or online reporting.
All things considered, journalism is not a dying career, but it’s becoming needy: employers are looking for skills other than writing basics. Of course, knowing how to write is a stong foundation that's still emphasized but it’s only the groundwork.
