Benjamin Franklin once said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy”. (Seriously, he actually said this) And what’s the only thing better than enjoying a frosty cold “God blessing” on a hot day? Enjoying a dozen beers…while watching football…seeing family…and pounding insane amounts of gravy smothered turkey, mashed potatoes, and corn.
That’s right people, the gluttonous holy day of Thanksgiving is finally upon us. And during this awesome celebration of National pride, it’s important that you don’t forget to include your loving Dachshund in the mix.
But what is safe to give little Buster or Moose? Can they handle turkey? Stuffing? The disgusting bunt cake Aunt Jan always brings? When do a few delicious treats turn into a toxic mix of steamy diarrhea and multi-colored dog vomit that you can never hope to get out of your new carpet?
The answer to this is pretty simple. Doxies do well with food that isn’t far removed from their traditional diet. Items such as turkey (without the skin or bones), plain baked potatoes, and sliced fruit. Apples and sweet potatoes in particular tend to be a big hit with the four-legged fiends, as long as they don’t contain any spices or seasoning. These easy treats, if dished out in moderation, will drive your gaggle of wiener dogs wild without shocking their stomach, or reeking havoc with their digestive systems.
Obviously, if plain meat and vegetables are good for your dog, anything smothered in sauce, or loaded with fat, is bad. Rich gravy’s and fats can give your buddy Pancreatitis, a potentially deadly inflammation of the pancreas that can cause lots of damage to your dog, and your house. Also, never give your doxie any food containing chocolate or onions. Both of these delicious poisons are toxic to dogs and are used as ingredients in several popular dishes.
If you stick to these few rules, your Dachshund is sure to enjoy Thanksgiving as much as you do. Oh, and just remember, Franklin’s beer quote was meant for humans, not dachshunds.
