Okay, so not all the counting is done-- or if it is, it is yet to be reported. There may in fact be chads and dangling involved. But let's not get ourselves carried away here with talk of dangling.

It is as yet unclear if Measure A, the parcel tax renewal for the Lagunitas School District, has passed. It needs 2/3 and according to the IJ has a mere 59% majority at the present time. It might end up being that the school district "will not be able to bridge a $503,000 budget shortfall and will be forced to make cuts" because a majority large enough to elect a Senator was not big enough to get money for 281 students, their classrooms, their teachers, and other school staff. Sorry kids, democracy hates you.

Hey kids, if it's any consolation, just think of New York City. At least an obscenely rich media baron like New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg can get reelected for a third term with a smaller percentage of the vote than Measure A , even though in the past he called the fight against term limits disgraceful. Or if you realize you're gay when you're older, you know now to avoid Maine when you want to get married to someone you love. Maine: It's for Lovers. Unless they're gay. Washington State, on the other hand, narrowly strengthened gay rights, with Referendum 71 passing with 51.65% of the vote.

Sometimes, secular democracy in America seems a sham, like when a majority of votes doesn't guarantee funding for a small school, or when the right to marry (and all the legal implications of that institution) for all citizens is struck down by different majority. Certainly, the economy isn't great right now, so I can understand some people not wanting to vote for a parcel tax. But really, these kids are your neighbors... AND it's a renewal of an existing tax, not a new one. SIGH. At least they'll probably grow up to vote for equal rights for gays. There's definitely a generation gap in terms of acceptance of homo- and bisexuality. Then again, roughly 40% of Generation Y doesn't believe in God. There's probably a relationship there.
