As the 39- year old Army psychiatrist lies in a coma as the investigation continues and details are emerging regarding the motives of the alleged Fort Hood killer of 13, the worst mass killing on a U.S military base.
Authorities on Friday seized Nidal Malik Hasan's home computer, searched his apartment and took away a Dumpster, while Hassan was attached to a ventilator in the hospital.
Back in May, law enforcement officials became suspicious of Hasan because of internet postings about suicide bombings and other threats. It is still questionable about Hasan's involvement in the postings and authorities are not allowed to speak on the matter or discuss the details of the case.
Between 2007 and 2008 Hasan enrolled in a health class at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda. Enrolled in the same class was Dr. Val Finnell. As a requisite the class delivered presentations, and Hasan chose the "war on terror", when others were speaking on matters like cleaning chemicals and mold.
Finnell said Hasan told classmates he was "a Muslim first and an American second."
And this is where it gets sticky. Hasan had been in disagreements with other Fort Hood soldiers, apparently over Hasan's Muslim beliefs.
The manager of the apartment complex Hasan was living, John Thompson, said the other soldier, John Van de Walker, allegedly keyed Hasan's car and tore up a bumper sticker that read "Allah is Love."
A subsequent report was filed on August 16, reading that Hasan's vehicle, a 2006 Honda Civic had been scratched by an unknown object creating $1000 in damage.
Van de Walker, has moved out of the apartment complex, says the apartment manager.
Hasan was in preparation for deployment, although the preparation can take months. Hasan told officials that he didn't want to go to Iraq but would be willing to serve in Afghanistan.
Noel Hasan, Hasan's aunt, said "he did not make many friends" and went on to say "the military was his life."
In a New York Times report, a cousin of the Fort Hood suspect, Nader Hasan, said that after counseling soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with post-traumatic stress disorder, Hasan knew the scars of war well.
"He was mortified by the idea of having to deploy," Nader Hasan said. "He had people telling him on a daily basis the horrors they saw over there."
Hasan became a major in April 2008, according to a July 2008 Army Times article, after serving
eight years as an enlisted soldier.
Military records show he also served in the ROTC as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and received a bachelor's degree in biochemistry there in 1997. Although the college has no record of him in ROTC. He previously attended community college in Barstow, California.
A candlelight vigil was held Friday for the victims of the Fort Hood shooting.
Nidal Malik Hasan is expected to survive.
