Carly Fiorina, the 55-year-old former Chief Executive Officer of Hewlett Packard Co., announced Wednesday that she she will vie for the Republican nomination for California's US Senate seat.

Holding steady in place though is Barbara Boxer, California's Democrat Senator. Elected to a third term in 2004, she received more than 6.9 million votes, the highest total for any Senate candidate in American history.

Rose Kapolcynski, a spokeswoman for Boxer's campaign wrote, “Fiorina received more than $100 million as CEO of Hewlett-Packard, and that kind of personal wealth could buy a massive campaign."

Until Fiorina, Barbara Boxer's only announced opposition was Chuck DeVore, the conservative state Assemblyman, who currently represents the 70th District of the State of California with over 500,000 constituents.

Though considered one of the most powerful business-women in the 1990's and 2000's, Fiornia joins the political arena heavily criticized.

She was forced out of Hewlett Packard in 2005, after pushing the company's controversial deal to buy Compaq in the spring of 2002, which did not produce the shareholder returns or profits Fiorina had promised.

She also served as economic adviser to John McCain's presidential run last year and ended up making Joe-Biden type remarks.

Fiorina went on MSNBC arguing that John McCain, Sarah Palin, Barack Obama, and Joseph Biden couldn't run Hewlett Packard.

A top McCain campaign advisor said, "Senator McCain was furious.”

After leaving HP, Fiorina recieved a severance package of $21 million, an amount that could help her campaign, or it could hurt it, especially amid the current public distrust of CEOs and wrong doing.

Critics said her HP dismissal was due to the company's poor performance, but Fiorina has since blamed it on a "dysfunctional" board.

Wednesday Fiorina told the OC Register "economic recovery and fiscal accountability will be my priorities. I will not settle for a jobless recovery."

She also said that California does not have "clear representation" going on to say that Barbara Boxer has only gotten three laws enacted during 18-year reign as a US Senator.

Barbara Boxer, despite the newly announced competition, is keeping her eye on the ball. Wednesday she pushed the climate bill through the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, ignoring the Republican boycott of the bill.

The Republican primary election for the California US Senate seat will be held June 8, 2010. The General election will take place in California on November 2, 2010.
