A week into November, you may be worried that you've missed out on snagging a deal on the Thanksgiving turkey. After all, the closer we approach November 26, the more in demand turkeys will be, so the higher the price, right? Wrong!

Budget cooks are just fine in waiting to buy a turkey for their holiday meals. Most grocery stores actually offer great deals on turkeys the closer we approach Thanksgiving, using these sales as a way to entice customers into the store to buy other holiday goods.

So what local supermarkets are offering the best deals? Here's how they stack up:

• Giant is offering Shady Brook Farms frozen turkeys for $0.47 per pound (limit 1, valid until November 12). Giant is also promising to match any competitor's coupon or advertised turkey price.

• Harris Teeter is offering HT Premium Tom Turkey (18-22 pounds frozen) for $0.89 per pound (valid until November 10).

• Wegmans is offering Round Hill or Country Pride frozen basted turkeys for $0.39 per pound, with a shopper's club card and minimum $25 purchase (valid until November 14).

• Trader Joe's is offering its fresh, brined, all natural turkeys for $1.79 per pound and fresh, Glatt Kosher all natural turkeys for $2.29 per pound (starting November 13).

(All prices are based on weekly advertised prices at supermarkets in the Fairfax County area. Prices may vary based on store location.)
