turgid--  swollen, bloated, bombastic, pompous

The most useful comment I ever got on a piece of writing was when a college professor told me my writing was turgid. Within one week, I was "Strunk and White" (authors of Elements of Style)  personified. No more fatuous palaver for me! I shrugged off the ignominy I felt when I read that comment, and used it to clean up my writing. But when a student hands in turgid prose, I try to find a more common word as criticism!
