gnomon-- a parallelogram with a replica of itself missing

My students' eyes rolled back in their heads when they heard of the significance of the word gnomon in James Joyce's Dubliners. Joyce's characters all have a section of their lives and hearts missing, and Joyce found this state gnomonic. Often, as a teacher, I find myself one corner short of a parallelogram, so I can relate!

Immanent in the symbolism of Joyce's words is the gnomon, which inspires Gabriel, and perhaps some other Dublin residents, to return to their roots.
