Creating a private retreat may involve some work but it is worth it in the end. Everyone wants their little slice of Heaven at home. For some it may be the den, or a swing on the front porch. Having a quiet retreat that is private is a great way to relax and commune with nature. Most rooms in our homes perform specific tasks. Having a private retreat set aside for the simple task of relaxation can be luxurious, but easily achieved.
It is important that you find a space, either inside your home or outside, that can offer you the privacy and quiet atmosphere you need. For some it may be a sitting room, or an enclosed porch. For others it may be a private garden with a swing. Try to view the space you can use as a room, and decorate it as such. Rooms usually require comfortable seating, varying degrees of light, a focal point and a certain amount of privacy to be a true retreat.
Focus your design for your little retreat to nurture your senses. Sights, sounds, smells, and touching all need to have something about the retreat that will cater to these in the best way. The spot should cater to sights by having a beautiful focal point, this can be a view, a fountain, etc. Catering to the sounds your ears will hear, may involve natural sounds from the outside, or a water feature, even a cd player with sounds that are soothing. Smells can be in the way of candles, flowers, or just a ready source of breezy fresh air. Touch should be addressed with comfortable seating that you can completely relax in. It should be big and surround you in comfort ideally offering a nice spot for a nap if need be.
Privacy is a must for the ultimate retreat to do a proper job of relaxing your mind, body and soul. If your planned retreat is outside, find a spot not readily viewable from all angles, with adequate amounts of shade and light. Privacy through fencing, various plants, trees and hedges will offer you the private area to reflect, commune and take it easy. If your planned spot for a retreat is inside, find a spot that you can at least create the illusion if need be for privacy. Paneled screens, curtains, all can help give you a little privacy and you are really only limited by your desire and imagination to make your retreat a reality.
