More than ever before, home owners are gravitating towards long term energy saving means in their home design, construction and decor. With this new wave of energy conscious consumers, it is imperative that efforts are made to meet the demand to merge both beauty and energy conservation.

Start your design project with energy efficient windows such as low e/Argon vinyl windows. Low e (low emittance) windows use a special coating that increase the window's ability to diminish heat transfer. Low e windows also reduce the amount of ultraviolet light transferred through the window, which results in less bleaching by the sun on drapes, curtains and carpets. Argon gas is infused in between double paned windows because it is much heavier than regular air and makes it much more difficult for cool or warm air to transmit through the window.

Energy conservation need not stop with just the type of window you install, it is still always a wise idea to help their efficiency with great window treatments designed to help keep costs down as well.  In climates where there are extremes in temperatures,  additional efforts are always a wise investment. The more layers you put between the interior of your home and the outside, the more comfortable and energy efficient your home will be.

Take into account the actual location and  exposure each window gets,  as well as what time of year you are in. Windows that are receiving vast amounts of sunlight need to be addressed differently. One option is to have drapes that are insulated with a woven fabric lining,  or  with a foam backing. During winter months, the sunlight that comes in can actually assist in keeping your home warmer, so drapes that are lined in a woven fabric may be all that is needed to manage the situation. Windows that are lined with a foam backing will be a great way to keep heat in. In rooms that get too hot from the sun they can keep it cool. Using a good strategy with your window treatments will always benefit your cooling and heating costs. You will have to pay attention to the location of the sun during different times of year to come up with the best placement for lined drapes of any kind. It is well worth it.

Shutters and louvered blinds are also manufactured in a wide variety of styles and can offer beauty and energy efficiency as well. Purchase quality manufactured shutters and blinds to ensure longevity and great insulation ability. Many of us have seen the use of Plantation shutters for their beauty and style, and in some cases these beautiful window treatments are a selling feature. To keep up with consumer awareness today,  many are now manufactured with energy saving materials. In addition to shutters, window shades such as Roman shades also offer a valuable layer of insulation from the ever changing temperatures outside. There are companies design and customize  corresponding shades to match drapes, etc. Options for beauty and conservation of energy are endless. If you can, consult with a good interior decorator to assist you in making the best choices for your home.
