Modern copiers reduce paper usage
Modern copiers reduce paper usage
Cooper, Jeff. "OCRRA - Recycle Paper and Cardboard." Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency - OCRRA - Recycling, Composting, Disposal in Syracuse and Onondaga County. Web. 09 Nov. 2009. <http://www.ocrra.org/about_facts_paper.asp>.

Going green and copiers seems like an unlikely eco-friendly duo, but think again. Although 100% paperless offices are the office of the future, not all companies are completely there just yet and regularly use printer-copiers. A modern copier cuts down on printing costs as well as being more efficient with office supplies and energy usage. Whether considering replacing an older copier or buying one for the first time, multi-function digital copiers offer features that help reduce paper consumption, are recycling compatible, energy efficient and part of the green office revolution.

This sounds crazy, but modern copiers actually reduce overall paper usage. Owning or leasing a multi-function copier machine, especially one equipped with a scanner, allows electronic document storage on an office network. The scanner reduces paper usage and eliminates the need for bulky storage cabinets which frees up some office space. Some copiers come with a tracking feature which can be used to monitor which department, employee or project is using the most paper. This detailed report, allows a company to develop and execute a plan reducing excess paper usage due to unnecessary printings.

Aside from minimizing paper usage, copiers are compatible with most eco-friendly office supplies such as ink, toner and paper. There even exists a new type of temporary-print paper that will reduce actual paper usage. This special paper allows the ink to fade over time and once completely faded, the paper can be reused. Once these supplies have been used, they are recyclable or can be returned to most office suppliers for discounts on future purchases. Once no longer operational, the copy machine itself can be recycled too!

Multi-function machines with scanning and faxing capabilities reduce the need for multiple machines. Having one machine rather than four further reduces energy usage. Some copiers come equipped with the Energy Star feature which causes the machine to “sleep” when not in use; this is the epitome of energy efficiency.

Although it seems counterproductive towards becoming an eco-friendly office, a multi-function copier is a useful tool to better manage your company’s paper dependency. By offering electronic storage, and tracking capabilities coupled with being more energy and supply efficient, a modern copier is an important player in a green office.
