So much for buying your beer at the grocery store.
A House committee killed Wednesday a bill that would have permitted grocery stores in Colorado to sell full-strength beer.
Under current law only 3.2 beer can be sold in supermarkets. Full-strength beer, including craft brews, are available only in the state's 1,650 liquor stores.
The hearing on the measure, which extended into the evening, motivated more than 90 people to testify in favor or against it.
Liquor store owners argued that opening the door to grocery store sales of full-strength beer would hurt their business and that of local brewers.
Meanwhile, convenience store owners claimed that the Sunday-sale law enacted last year has hurt their business and therefore they need to make up for the losses by being able to sell full-strength beer.
HB 1192, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Liane "Buffie" McFadyen, was killed by the House Business & Labor Committee on a 7-4 vote despite the submission of a supporting petition that included 66,000 signatures.
