Lehigh Valley runners are lucky – this region is within driving distance of some of the biggest and best races held each year, including yesterday’s 40th running of the ING New York City Marathon.
A record 42,000+ runners competed in this year’s New York City Marathon, traversing the five boroughs from Staten Island across the Verrazano Narrows bridge and into Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and finally into Manhattan where they cross the finish line in Central Park. Over 2 million spectators line the course, and an estimated 315 million watch the race coverage on television.
For the first time since 1982, an American man won the race: Meb Keflezighi, a 34-year-old U.S. citizen born in Eritrea (Africa) took first with a time of 2:09:15. In the women’s competition, Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia won with a time of 2:28:52.
Although the field included many elite runners, including Paula Radcliffe and Ryan Hall among others, most participants are average, yet dedicated, runners.
