Why are some people so successful in achieving their goals and others flounder? There is more to setting goals than just coming up with them. By following these steps, you’ll align yourself towards achieving your goals and increase your success rate.

Step 1: Brainstorm the goal map. Look at the six main areas and come up with goals you would like to achieve in each area.

Step 2: Get specific. Most goals are not specific enough for the unconscious to fully understand what you mean. For example, if your goals is to “make more money”, then when you find a quarter on the ground, you have technically succeeded in achieving your goal. Therefore, be specific with your goals, such as “make $5,000 income monthly”.

Step 3: Set up action steps. Although affirmations and specific goals are great to give you focus and open you up to seeing opportunities that present themselves, you also want to start working towards your goal. For example, wishing to win the lottery will never happen unless you buy a lottery ticket. This example is also not an ideal goal because it is beyond your control of achieving it. Set up goals that you can achieve and determine the steps you can take to achieve your goal. Each of these action steps become mini-goals. If one becomes unachievable due to some obstacle or circumstance, find alternative options towards your ultimate goal.

Step 4: Time-bind each action step and ultimate goal. Use specific dates to achieve your goals; “someday” and “tomorrow” never seem to come around! Remember to be realistic about your time frame; walk through your action steps and set dates for each of those to be achieved and then you can determine a good idea of when you can achieve your ultimate goal.

Step 5: Ensure your goals align with your values. Figure out what’s really important to you - time with your family, being successful in your career, improving your health, etc. Many problems with people not achieving their goals is due to the fact that their goals contradict their values. For example, if one of your core values is to spend time with your family, including weekends and going to your kids’ ball games during the week, then having a goal to become the number one salesperson in your office *may* not work if that requires you to work overtime.

Step 6: Envision with emotion. The problem with positive affirmations is that they are usually done without emotion. Emotion adds an encompassed internal dedication towards achieving your goals. Envision living your goal - what do you see, what do you hear, what can you feel, what do you smell? Incorporate all of your senses and feel what it is like to live your goal and your unconscious will truly help guide you to achieve it!

Step 7: Follow-through. Setting up your goals is only the beginning. It is up to you to go out there and start achieving your goals by following through on your action steps that will guide you to your goal.

By following these steps you will easily find your way to success!
