The Seawolves lost to the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday, November 13th by a lopsided score of 5-1 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin in front of an energetic crowd of 11,870 fans. UAA played a physical game but Wisconsin was noticably faster and on this night, simply better. Boxscore
Freshman Craig Smith of the Badgers scored 14 seconds into the game on a shot that Olthuis must wish he had back. He also may be wondering where the back-checkers were as a broken rush by the Badgers ended with the puck on the backhand of an unmarked Smith rushing toward the front of the net. Wisconsin kept the pressure on as Olthuis redeemed himself and kept the Seawolves in the game early with a couple of flexible saves.
The Badgers second goal came at the end of some sustained pressure in the Seawolves zone. After shielding the puck from UAA down low, the Badgers found an open Cody Goloubef in the slot and he quickly collected the pass and wristed it over the far shoulder of Olthuis for a 2-0 Wisconsin lead.
The Seawolves got an oppurtunity to get back into the game with five minutes left in the first period when they went on a 5 on 3 power play. Unfortunately, instead of setting up in the Badger zone, the power play turned into some end to end hockey where both goalies were tested by odd-man rushes, including a breakaway save by Olthuis.
Wisconsin would make it 3-0 before the end of the first period as senior Aaron Bendickson would score his first goal of the season on the backhand at the end of a tenacious rush into the zone by the Badgers.
The second period saw Wisconsin come out trying to match UAA's physicality and the result being a couple of power play oppurtunities for the Seawolves. Wisconsin easilly killed both power plays as UAA was once again unable to set up their power play units. The second half of the period was brutal to watch as a Seawolves fan and saw UAA left shorthanded for long periods of time. Constant scuffling and altercations filled both teams penalty boxes, but with UAA always ending up shorthanded. Wisconsin sustained pressure for the majority of the period and eventually scored their 4th goal of the game on the power play at 12:08, a rebound goal by senior Michael Davies.
The Seawolves continued to struggle in the third period and even gave up a shorthanded goal early in the period. An attempt by Curtis Leinweber to stickhandle around a Badger penalty killer resulted in an odd-man rush for Wisconsin that saw Bendrickson score his second goal of the night at 5:36 of the third period. UAA finally got on the board 90 seconds later when Craig Parkinson scored a power play goal after some hard work in front of the net by the Seawolf forwards. Assists by Mickey Spencer and Daniel Naslund. This would be the final goal of the game.
Olthuis did all he could but even that was not enough as Wisconsin dominated the game throughout. Junior Jon Olthuis stopped 32 of 37 shots against. Surpisingly, 37 shots is actually below Wisconsin's average for the season. Junior Brett Bennett got the start for the Badgers and stopped 19 of 20. Both teams went 1-8 on the power play.
UAA will face Wisconsin again tomarrow night at 4:00 PM AK.
