Massage therapists through out the United States have commented on a press release dated November 3, 2009 (see story) stating that Massage Envy has been voted the “Best Massage” and “Best Day Spa” in Phoenix, by Phoenix Magazine readers. The therapists, many of whom have significant experience and some of whom have worked for Massage Envy, believe that the vote taken by Phoenix Magazine readers was less than credible.
Constance Faa'izah Saafir, Chief Executive Officer at Health Direct says; “It makes me wonder how is it possible to be voted the best (massage) when this particular facility hires newly graduated students.” This sentiment is prevalent among many massage therapists.
Mikki Anderson, a certified massage therapist, says, “I am like others, amazed that Massage Envy could possibly be voted best spa. Hello!! A spa by definition has water-based therapies. They to this date, do not. Secondly, I would like to know how the contest was conducted and with whom. Also, the criteria used to judge. I must tell you that it seems bogus and like paid advertisement by Massage Envy. Your paper (Phoenix Magazine) has lost much credibility.”
Many other massage therapists and spa goers in the Phoenix area have echoed these feelings repeatedly, asking how a clinic could be considered a day spa. Some have also questioned the legitimacy of the Best Massage honor. How could Phoenix Magazine include Massage Envy in it’s day spa category when even Massage Envy does not claim to be a day spa, especially in Phoenix?
Phoenix Magazine’s editor, Ashlea Deahl, has responded to our initial inquiries stating that, “The editorial staff did not choose a Best Massage or Day Spa in this year’s Best of the Valley…” the readers did. “We have no control over what our readers choose, and people often confuse their choices…” says Ms. Deahl.
Still Phoenix Magazine must have some criteria that they use when reviewing readers responses before they include a particular answer as part of their results. Answers to the question, “Who is the best day spa in Phoenix” that include responses that are not day spas certainly would be excluded from the final results. Since Massage Envy was not excluded, Phoenix Magazine apparently believes they are a day spa. Hopefully, their definition of what constitutes a day spa will follow shortly.
