Yes, it is getting to be that time of year again.  Unfortunatly for many people, the holiday season is looking pretty grim this year considering the employment situation.

Food banks and other charitable organizations are already suffering from higher demand for services than previous years.  The higher demand combined with less people having spendable income to purchase items for donatation means there is going to be less for those who are in need.

The one commodity that everyone has available for donation is time.  Service organizations will gladly accept any time you wish to donate.  Especially during the holidays when their resources are stretched to the limit.  Those who are unemployed should have a lot of time available for donation and through interaction with other people, could possibly lead to employment. You just never know how things are going to develop.  So, please find a charitable organization in your area and offer to donate some time.  Even if you can't afford to purchase the particular items they are requesting, your offer will be appreciated.

One such organization located in Sedona puts together gift bags for the elderly living at Verde Valley Manor and the people who participate in the Meals on Wheels program in the Verde Valley.  Last year they handed out over 450 gift bags.  This year their goal is over 525 gift bags.

They are asking for donations of lap blankets or shawls, towel/hand towel/wash cloth sets, and $20 gift certificates for a local grocery store. The also need toiletry items such as shampoo, conditioner, brush and comb sets, boxes of Kleenex or handkerchiefs, soft warm slippers and whoever thinks of this one...denture cleaners!  They would also like a new gift item for an elderly man or woman.

They are trying to help the environment and request you use a recycled paper bag or reusable cloth bag.  If you will call 928-2821524, they will even come pick your donated items up.  And if you have any time to donate, they will gladly accept it.

If you are looking for an organization in the Phoenix area that will gladly accept your donation of time, there is the One Voice LGBT Community Center.  Their web site is here. They have a number of ongoing projects and appreciate any extra time you have to give.  One worthwhile project is their annual Turkey Drive.  By offering raffle tickets for $5 each, they are providing an opportunity for people who can only donate a little at a time to help provide turkeys for Thanksgiving.  They would be happy to sell you more tickets if you can give more than the $5.  All of the proceeds from ticket sales goes to the purchase of turkeys to be donated to needy families.  The raffle prizes were still being determined at the time of this writing.

Tickets may be purchased at the One Voice Community Center during normal business hours.  For more information or to donate your extra time, please contact Jason  at jason_p@1vcc.org
