One of the persistent false stereotypes that many hold about those who start Network Marketing or Direct Sales businesses is that they are people who are desperately looking for an escape from a traditional job they either hate or are not skilled at. While this may be true in a small number of cases, the vast majority of people in Direct Sales and Network Marketing loved their jobs and were in fact quite successful at what they were doing before. Most people don't even think about starting a second career in Direct Sales or Network Marketing until they realize the realities we will explore in this article series.
Reason One: Pursuing one's OWN dreams, not someone else's.
To be employed by another is to spend one’s own time, money, and energy (the very building blocks of one's life) in pursuit of someone else's dreams of wealth. Those who work at Wal-Mart are building Sam Waltons dream, those who work at Microsoft are building Bill Gates' dream. Building one’s own dream requires one’s own business (even if it is only part-time).
Perhaps the reason many people are content to work for someone else instead of risking the possibility of failure and loss that can accompany starting a new business venture is that they have forgotten how to dream. To remember forgotten dreams, people need to ask themselves what excited them as a child (children don't know the meaning of impossible and more adults should tear that page out of their dictionary).
Also whatever one would be doing right now (instead of reading this article) if there were enough time, money and energy to do anything one wanted any time they wanted, is a good indicator.
For some, it would be mission trips or church planting, for others, traveling the world. Still others would be shopping for their dream car or building their dream house. Whatever those dreams be, achieving them will take more time and/or money than one can make without having a secondary income stream, ideally a residual income stream where they get paid over and over for work they did once.
This is how many authors and recording artists earn massive income. Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley are no longer among us, but every time any of their works is performed or viewed their heirs are entitled to and paid royalties. Residual income enables one to continually provide for their family long after they themselves are gone.
No traditional job pays employees twice for doing the same work once. To gain the time and money freedom to pursue one’s own dreams (whatever they are) one simply must break free from the paradigm of having all their income coming from a single employer.
We will look at another powerful reason to have one’s own business in our next article.
