Just when you thought Tiger had all but sealed the deal in Shanghai, Phil Mickelson fired a five-under 67 in Saturday’s third round. Mickelson birdied three of his final five holes, earning him a tenuous lead going into Sunday. Woods and Nick Watney both posted a two-under 70, leaving them two shots off the pace.
Mickelson’s round was characteristically erratic. He began the day trailing Tiger by two shots, but after a round highlighted by a string of birdies on the opening and finishing holes, suffered only a single bogey on the ninth, earning him his first final pairing with Woods since 2005 at Doral.
Speaking of Woods, he was less than thrilled with his performance. Tiger attributed his dissatisfaction to a temperamental putter. He was unable to take advantage of the par fives on the back nine; he’ll look to rediscover the touch that offered a pair of 67s on Thursday and Friday. Ryan Moore (11 under) and Lee Westwood (10 under) remain within striking distance (full leaderboard here), but we all know tomorrow will be about Tiger and Phil.
They’re primed for the main stage, and history says they're likely to live up to their billing. Tiger wants to close the season strong, but Lefty is up to his old tricks.
