The new Honda Insight will compete against the Toyota Prius for the green car poster child award

Over a dozens green cars are crisscrossing the state of Colorado this weekend in a green convoy  sponsored by the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association.

The statewide green car convoy is timed to coincide with the Denver Auto Show and will culminate in a green car parade at the state capitol in Denver on Sunday.

The convoy has already been to Vail and according to the Vail Daily:

"The core group — a Mercury Mariner hybrid, Volkswagen Touareg clean diesel and a BMW advanced diesel — left Wednesday from Denver and headed to Montrose. At each stop along the way, the drivers are met by dealers and people interested in what these new cars have to offer — which is mostly great gas mileage.

“It’s been really interesting,” Czupor said. “We’ve had dealers and news media greeting us at every city.”

The Grand Junction Sentinel reports:

"The cars in the convoy included hybrids, diesel- and ethanol-fueled SUVs, sedans and trucks.

Many of these vehicles are already on local lots, so there’s no need to wait for delivery.

“We’re getting two of the first 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid models tomorrow,” said Lynn Robison, Honda sales manager at Fuoco Motors Inc.

The Insight is marketed as the “Hybrid for Everyone” with a suggested starting price under $20,000.

Richard Nance of Elk Mountain Motors in Glenwood Springs said he prefers a diesel-powered car to the hybrid.

Nance said he has been tracking the savings of diesel drivers on a simple spreadsheet. He said the cost of diesel is currently equal to that of premium unleaded gasoline, but “you can go twice as far on a tank of diesel.”

If you are interested in checking out the convoy for yourself you can see the rest of the week's schedule HERE.

Today, Saturday, and Sunday the cars will be at stopping in the following cities and times:

10-11am—Canon City, The Abbey Event Center (2951 E. Hwy 50)

You can also follow the progress of the convoy by following Tim Jackson, the president of the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association on Twitter HERE.

Jackson, said, "We encourage everyone to come out and see us when we roll into town.   This will be a great opportunity to ask questions, touch and feel the newest "green" cars and even kick the tires, so to speak."

The STATEWIDE GREEN CAR CONVOY is a prelude to the Denver Auto Show, April 1-5, at the Colorado Convention Center, 700 14th Street, in downtown Denver.

This popular annual event will feature more than 500 new 2009 hybrids, crossovers, sedans, sports cars, minivans and trucks for every driving need and every budget.

Plus the 2010 “intro” cars will be seen for the first time in the Rocky Mountain West.
