The workout drinks at the GNC always seem a little intimidating for a caffeine guy like me. While I regularly work out and have been known to do a creatine/protein shake once and a while - I am still a newbie to the world of Stacking, and that whole shelf of strange bodybuilding supplements lining the walls of the local fitness store.
Never one for backing down from something new - I decided to hit the gym hard and really try out all the caffeinated energy products. The first on my list is ABB Diet Sport Tea, who kindly gave me some or their products to sample. The sport tea is without doubt the most accessible of all their products - not really that different than so many other sport teas I have had in the past. With a moderate amount of caffeine, I found the 20oz bottle had some good stuff to offer without being over the top. As a workout drink it was not really so great - but for just hangin' around, all four flavors were pretty tasty stuff
Buzz/Nutrition:7
First off, the caffeine count in these drinks is pretty low, coming in at 90mg per 20oz bottle, or less than an equivalent amount of Diet Mountain Dew. Like DMD it contained no sugar and very low calories, so it was particularly easy to slam them down. The 90mg was not really enough for any sort of buzz, as much as it helped me keep more alert for a short time.
Gym-wise, this drink did nothing to enhance my workout. I think there was too little caffeine and other nutrients to really help out. There is some electrolytes in here which is supposed to help hydration. While this did hydrate me more after the workout, I am one of those who sweat on the treadmill enough to gross out most people next to me ( I am a sweater). I still needed a half gallon of water after drinking this just to get to the point I felt I was no longer thirsty. I would advise that Turbo Tea drinking is best when you just need refreshment.
Packaging:9
One thing I really liked about ABB Turbo Tea is how nice the packaging was. It just makes sense to put a lid on drinks over 20oz, right? this way, you could even use the darn thing again if you wanted to. Not that you would - as the 20 ounces go down smoothly enough that saving some is a challenge. I really like the look of the package too, with designated hand-hold spots like a sports car gear shifter. I love the overall layout - looking very sporty and unique. They list the caffeine as well as everything else. The coolest part was the "what you need; what it's got" panel which works to sell the Turbo Teas very well.
Taste:8
Even though this is supposed to be a naturally brewed iced tea drink, this tastes more like cans of Lipton's Brisk. Not that this is bad by any means, but is definitely filled with fake lemon, raspberry and peach. The tea also tastes powdered - which isn't helped by the very sweet Ace-K sucralose sweeteners. If you can keep it cold - this stuff tastes very good even if it does not taste like real tea. All 20 ounces go down very smooth and fast - regardless of which flavor you get.
