Best selling Shots in the US: 5 hour energy

July 15, 5:28 PM

This energy shot, seen on informercials and in front of every convenience store in the universe, might not be the first product out there, but it is by all accounts the most popular. Their slogan, "Feel it in minutes, lasts for hours" is somewhat true, in that you don't feel the comedown for a long time, and the crash is virtually non-existant. But there is no initial boost. Some time after drinking I noticed that I was not sleepy or draggy, even without a cup of coffee, and was not heading for the fridge for an energy drink. So I definitely felt something, but the effect was not the same as chugging a Spike.  or even a Mountain Dew.

I did like all the warnings on the bottle, like you are holding some vicious brew in your hands. In reality, this in a beginner's energy drink. I highly doubt this drink would do much for your average caffeine drinker,  or keep awake those who are really tired.  While both flavors of their shots  are tasty and easy to shoot down, I  would not take this and expect to get any surges of power - more like a few hours of clarity.

Nutrition:7
The drink has some interesting ingredients in it besides the caffeine. There is enough niacin to give a person a big ol' niacin flush (Where you turn red - sometimes getting your skin itchy and prickly for a few minutes), A ton of the B vitamins, as well as Citicoline(this is a psychostimulant, a substance that enhances locomotor behavior. Other psychostimulants are cocaine and meth),  a bunch of energy drink ingredients and stomach enzymes (amylase, protease, lipase, cellulase, lactase).
In terms of energy, I did not get much of a rush from it, but still had a sustained alertness for 2 or 3 hours. While I would not take this to boost my energy levels, I could see using this instead of coffee if I needed a quick acting way to keep me going on long trips without bathroom breaks.

Taste:8
The orange is downright tasty. Of all their flavors, orange is the easiest to drink without needing any sort of chaser to kill the chalky flavor.  Berry is a little sour and chalky, but orange has a great flavor goes down smoothly. Some orange flavored shots, like NOS, are very hard to take down, forcing you to hold your nose and shoot it past your taste buds in order to get it down. Not so with this - which is pleasant enough that it could be refrigerated and sold in a bigger container if they wanted to. If you are scared of taking energy shots, this one is a great primer.

Packaging:7
Some guy running through the mountains like he's being chased by a wild bear. He is not jogging, but sprinting. Now I do like hiking, even climbing in the mountains - but the only time you will EVER catch me running up a mountain is when something is out to get me. Of the times that has happened I guarantee the adrenaline in my body is a thousand times more powerful than any shot could be.

The shot package design they have has become the defacto standard for shots. The size, the amount of liquid, the cap have all become more or less what you would come to expect from an energy shot. This one leaves you to guess at the amounts of caffeine in the little bottle - which is downright frustrating. They do give you their website and phone number for information, which is helpful.

Website:7
For such a simple site, the download time is crazy.  Yes, it is because of the superfuous movie they have, where words swish very after-effects like around the bottle.   The site is like the infomercial.  There is a little bit of information and a whole lot of prochure.  Want to find out about what is in the shot?  Good Luck.  You will find an energy drink vs. 5 hour comparison, info about how great their product is, and a bunch of videos.  What you dont get is caffeine content, info on the more interesting stomach enzymes and info on the company iteslf. Instead you have a section devoted to explaining how to drink an energy shot (um, open it, hold up to lips, swallow...)

Overall code is not bad, using javascript and css nicely and having generally clean code.  Wish it looked better or had more info though
