Trying desperately to pull my overworked brain cells from their perpetual desire to slog off, I scour the aisles for the perfect caffeinated substance. From Korean Drink Cans to stomach churning bargain caffeinated malt liquor to organic hand picked beans from the Peruvian mountaintops, Ill help you on your journey through the world’s most popular psychoactive substance.
The nations largest coffee retailer cut back 600 jobs and closing 100 slow stores in February of this year, and just announced it will be shutting down over 500 more stores across the nation. This new step could eliminate as many as 12,000 full- and part-time positions. They also announced that it now plans to open fewer than 200 stores in its coming fiscal year, which begins Sept. 29.
Back in February, The CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, said that "We realize that we are operating in an intensely challenging environment, one in which our customers and (employees) have extremely high expectations of Starbucks," Schultz wrote. "And we have to step up to the challenge of being strategic as well as nimble as our business evolves. Unfortunately, we have not been organized in a manner that allowed us to have a laser focus on the customer." in a memo leaked to Jim Romenesko's Starbucks Gossip blog last year, Schulz explained how the continued Starbucks expansion was hurting the soul of his coffee empire.
Since then there have been new store drinks with caffeine mix-ins, deals involving baked goods, and non-caffeinated smoothies added to the menu. There have also been canned energy drink rollouts and a whole new supposed focus on their new coffee flavor, Pike Place Roast.
There are currently more than 16,000 Starbucks stores worldwide. That means many jobs will be lost around the country. “Throughout the history of the company, we have always aspired to put our people first. This makes our decision to close stores difficult, because it is disrupting the lives of the people who have worked so hard to deliver superior service to our customers,” Schultz continued. “We sincerely thank each one of them and are very proud of their many contributions to the company." Starbucks said it expects many workers to find jobs in nearby stores. Topics:
