Mexican Energy on a diet - Caballo Negro Zero

Here is a product geared toward dieting Hispanics - from the first Hispanic energy drink to hit the market. This product was specifically designed to appeal to Mexican-Americans. Arley Campbell, president of Caballo Negro (Black Horse) said that “We wanted to give Hispanics more energy that tastes great for a reasonable price.” Launched in 2004, Caballo Negro was shrouded in the colors of the Mexican flag—red, white and green with a bi-lingual label.

I really enjoyed this flavor, very tart but not sour. Not sweet like a soda but definitely sugary. It had a flavor like a cherry Red Bull, but not really.Maybe underripe berry citrus. Either way - this is a really unique and complex flavor that you could tell they spend a long time creating.

According to their director of operations, “It took us 87 tries to get the taste right. It was something different we were doing.” “It took a year and a half to find the unique flavors that would absorb the nutrients and vitamin taste when they’re put together,” agrees Campbell. “Since then we’ve adjusted it seven additional times to fine tune it. Our drink doesn’t have that vitamin taste; we’ve eliminated it, flavored it out.”

It is very true. With no aftertaste and very little medicinal flavor Caballo Negro was definitely a leader.

I really enjoyed the package - even if the sell was a little heavy handed. Still, I thought the use of the old west font on the Mexican flag worked pretty well. The only thing that got to me was the absence of any caffeine information. The Mexican product is labeled in English as Black Horse, with Caballo Negro appearing at the bottom of the can — exactly the reverse of its U.S. packaging. “In Mexico, people want products that are American,” Campbell says. “It was actually the people in Mexico who asked me to consider changing the name of our product.”

My guess it is it between 80-100mgs , but it works really really well. I had a very nice energy buzz going for a solid 3 hours from this - and because this is the no sugar variety I felt no crash for it either. While not the most powerful drink out there, I really felt the buzz. .Campbell says,“We put the maximum amount of energy ingredients in it that we thought were a good idea." This is also sans HFCS, and is sweetened by a sucralose Ace K mix that is not too sweet and not medicinal.
This also contains Horny Goat weed, which is supposedly an aphrodisiac, but is pretty superfluous and does not add to the energy. They still have Una de gato, or cat’s claw, a Peruvian herb has long been touted as a remedy for countless ailments.
