It takes a clear focus and lots of heart to build a solid business in tough times. Sharif Hageali, owner of Steel & Ink Tattoo in Highland, has both.

“Highland is known for being tough when it comes to getting a business permit. People were amazed mine went through so easily,” said Hageali, “I just showed up with answers to all of their questions. They were concerned about how a tattoo business is regulated. My application included research on all of the laws and regulations that apply.”

Steel & Ink Tattoo, which opened in June, almost has the feel of a top-line beauty parlor. It has a comfortable seating area, complete with TV. Samples of tattoo art are everywhere. The artists, who are all friendly professionals, consult with you before any work is done.

“People let me draw on them,” said Oliver Guthrie, one of the artists, “It’s the coolest honor I can think of. My job is to give people exactly what they want. It’s a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork that will stay with them forever.”

When you step into the area where tattoos are done, you’ll find scrupulously clean workstations with special chairs that let you sit or recline to have work done. There are also two private rooms, one of which is for piercings.

Hageali is quick to point out everything done to make sure health standards are met and exceeded. Everything used for tattoos and piercings either arrives pre-sterilized in airtight packages or it is sterilized using an autoclave in the clean room on premises. All of the inks are FDA-approved.

“Everyone here is certified by the health department,” said Hageali, “We periodically get training and always make sure we’re up-to-date with all requirements.”

Tattoos can range from a small design to reproductions of photos. Clients come in for all kinds of work. Some get their first tattoos, others want to memorialize something important in their lives. Many come to have old tattoos refreshed or revised.

Steel & Ink Tattoo, at 27258 Base Line Ave. in Highland, CA, has brought the tattoo business into the mainstream. Their competitive advantage is an easily accessible, comfortable and healthy environment combined with the desire and ability to give you one-of-a-kind body art that will last a lifetime.
