In response to an executive order by Governor Schwarzenegger, resulting from the state’s budget crisis, most state workers are being forced to take unpaid furlough days on the first three Fridays of each month. Because of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, these workers will also be off on the fourth Friday in November and December. The first Friday that state workers will be back at their desks is January 29. For this reason, people are encouraged to do as much business as possible online.

Perhaps the busiest of all the state offices are the local DMV offices. Much DMV business can be taken care of through the website (click here). It is highly recommended that people who need to take care of business at the DMV on the days the office is open make an appointment online in advance through this webpage. Otherwise, you may find yourself among the ranks of people who did not make an appointment ahead of time and are waiting for two hours or more to see a DMV worker. This makes tempers short and visits unpleasant. So plan ahead.

California State offices are expected to be closed as a result of Furlough Fridays until at least June of 2010.
