The month of October has to be, without a doubt, the best time to visit Austin. The maxim “keep Austin weird” is the most apparent in October, when Austin comes alive in dazzling splendor, decorated from head to foot. The month is jam packed with anything and everything a person could need to have an eventful and exciting romp around Austin.

For example, The Austin Film Festival will be at the Alamo Draft House until next Thursday. The Austin Film Festival is a film festival featuring local filmmakers and movies they have produced this year. Filmmakers are given awards based on quality, presentation, actors, and effort. There is a screening process the films are put through before they are shown at the Draft House, so you won’t have to worry about being bored to death! And since the month is October, the Film Festival has prepared accordingly; each movie presented has a spooky theme. Zombies of Mass Destruction play Thursday at 10:15 pm. That sounds spooktacular.

Another worthwhile event in Austin is Halloween itself. People come far and wide to congregate on 6th street, each person costumed extravagantly. The music venues never fail to book fantastic performances; I personally would recommend Stubb’s Barbeque- not only is it one of the greatest music venues in Austin, its also a barbeque restaurant. The Butthole Surfers will be playing there on Halloween night; if you aren’t familiar with them, you should be at Stubb’s on Saturday. Peaches will be performing with The Butthole Surfers, ensuring a fantastic show. I for one will be there.

If literature is more your style, try exploring the Ransom Center on the University of Texas campus. There is an Edgar Allen Poe exhibit until November 4th, featuring some of Poe’s original work, including The Raven and Annabel Lee. There is no fee, and there usually is, so anyone and everyone should take advantage of that opportunity. There won’t be more like it.

The month of October is almost over, but the partying here in Austin never stops. However, that doesn’t mean you should miss out on the wonderful events Austin is hosting this month.
