Jersey Boys opened on Broadway on November 6, 2005. It is consistently sold out and is a favorite of critics and theater goers alike. Not only does have it have touring companies around the world, but people come to New York's August Wilson Theatre nightly to watch the show.
Jersey Boys is the story behind the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, a rock and roll group that took the music world by storm in the 1960's. They are called Jersey Boys because they got together in Newark, NJ where they got their start until fame and fortune led them to many places. The show features some of the group's biggest hits including "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Oh What a Night," and many others. It won four Tony Awards back in 2006 including Best Musical and Best Actor.
The original cast has changed but it is still one of the hottest Broadway tickets. What keeps a show like this going so strong for so long a time? This morning, one of the new leads in the show said on New York City's popular oldies radio station, WCBS-FM, that it is the music that keeps it going so strong. Just go to the Jersey Boys'' website and listen to the hits as they play. The music is still fresh after all these years. People who grew up singing these songs probably remember all the words as the music plays. There is an energy to this music that draws you in. The storyline focuses on how the members of the group got together and the highs and lows of making in the business. But it is the music that keeps it moving along so well.
So as the curtain rises at 8:00 p.m. tonight, it will mark the completion of 4 successful years as a major attraction on Broadway, which is no small feat. Congratulations Jersey Boys, glad you're doing so well.
