Livingston County Democrats honored veterans recently at party headquarters in Brighton.
Dephine Palkowski, who is a member of the county Democratic executive board, said it is important “to have a special day that we honor them and that they know they are appreciated. It is well-deserved.”
Palkowski and fellow executive board member Annette Taylor enjoyed a soup and salad luncheon as they waited for U.S. Senator Carl Levin (D-Michigan) to arrive. They were among about 30 people in attendance.
Others included area veterans like Joe Carney of Brighton. Carney is a Vietnam-era veteran. While he said he did not serve “in country,” he spent two years in the Army’s special forces unit.
Joe Hall, also of Brighton, said he attended the luncheon at the urging of Carney and to support his best friend. In 1966, Hall spent 11 months, 28 days in Vietnam as a member of the Army’s signal corps in Pleiku.
Bill Hunt of South Lyon also attended. In 1967, he spent 11 months, 18 days in Vietnam.
In addition to Levin, Beverly Leneski, who is the chief of volunteer services at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, spoke and thanked the Livingston Democrats for donating items for patients at the hospital.
County Dems presented her with lap robes they made over three recent weekends. Leneski said the robes are given free of charge to all veterans being admitted to the hospital.
Leneski herself is a veteran of the Army. She served from 1984-86 and one year in the National Guard. She met her husband in the Army at Fort Meade, Md. She’s been at her job at the VA Hospital for 11 years. “It’s one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve ever had,” she said.
