The holidays are upon us and for those who are planning a swarm of house guests, big feasts and Olympian feats of gift shopping, buying and wrapping, help is ready and waiting.

Download one of the several countdown apps such as iHolidays ’09 (99 cents) and you will learn that as of today, there are 20 days till Thanksgiving, 49 days till Christmas and 56 days till New Year’s Day.

Thanksgiving Day

Using an app like Days to Thanksgiving (99 cents) can help put your holiday planning in perspective, keep you focused on what needs to get done before the big feast. And Thanksgiving Dinner Recipes ($3.99) does just as the its name implies and provides a cornucopia of tantalizing recipes to dish up, including pictures and step-by-step instructions.

Christmas

Moving on to Christmas, take a look at Christmas Countdown With Music (free) and Christmas Countdown (free). These apps countdown the days to the big day and include features like holiday music, falling snowflakes or an animated Christmas tree that grows bigger as the day approaches.

With Christmas Tree Decorator (99 cents) you can avoid the spilled needles and fire hazard and decorate this virtual tree. Decorate with colored lights, ornaments, candy canes, icicles and presents. Watch the tree sparkle as you countdown the days till Christmas. You can magnify and move the tree for better placement of the decorations), choose among three backgrounds and enjoy sound effects. You can save your decorated tree as a photo and share it or use it as wallpaper.

Shoppers can check their gifts lists twice or more with Better Christmas List ($2.99), Nice List Christmas Gift Manager (99 cents) and Santa’s List Christmas Gift Organizer ($1.99).

Better Christmas List offers a handy overview of your holiday shopping. Create lists for individual family members, friends or groups and then tap a name to see the status of any particular gift list. Check the to-do while shopping to see a complete view of presents still to buy.

With Nice List Christmas Gift Manager quickly add people from your phones address book to a list. You can record gifts and estimated price, mark gifts as bought, wrapped or shipped and keep track of your budget and how much you've spent.

Santa’s List allows you to store pictures of each gift recipient, create a wish list for yourself, include a budget and calculate how much has been spent, and e-mail gift lists.

Get ready to bake some cookies for Saint Nick. The recipes in Festive Holiday Baking (99 cents) each requires no more than eight ingredients. If you can’t quite decide which of the desserts to try, just shake your iPhone and the app with suggest a recipe for you.

New Year’s

The Days to New Year app (99 cents) counts down the days to the celebrations, and on New Year’s Eve if you want to no to the second when the new year will arrive, you can find apps too numerous to list here that will keep you posted and provide background music, chimes or party noises to enhance the celebratory atmosphere
