There’s no need to fly halfway across the country if you (or your kids) are clamoring for thrill rides, live shows, or even costumed characters. Kansas City area residents have a world-class theme park right in their own backyard, Worlds of Fun. Just one admission price includes access to over 50 rides and attractions, and a variety of live entertainment.

Take a ride on the wild side.
Deep in the jungle of Worlds of Fun a dangerous predator lurks, ready to shred those fighting to escape its claws. The brand-new Prowler, in the Africa section, is a beast of a wooden coaster tangled within the park’s forested terrain. With a top speed of 51 mph, riders grasped in the Prowler’s clutches carve a path through a ravine with powerful but smooth changes of direction, speed, and elevation.

More thrills and chills
The Patriot is the longest and tallest inverted roller coaster in the region. You can also ride the Boomerang, the Mamba (a state-of-the-art scream machine, which is one of the tallest, longest, and fastest coasters in the world), and the Timber Wolf (consistently rated one of the top coasters in the world by serious roller coaster enthusiasts). The whole family can enjoy Spinning Dragons, a spinning roller coaster that takes passengers on a wild, twisting ride!

Just for kids (& kids at heart)
Straight out of the pages of the Sunday comics, everybody’s favorite beagle and his friends are hosting an exciting collection of family rides and attractions at Camp Snoopy, Worlds of Fun’s family playland. Worlds of Fun is the only place in the Midwest where families can meet Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the rest of the Peanuts gang. Kids will enjoy rides on the Red Baron, a swinging airplane themed around Snoopy’s classic adventures, and many other adorable themed rides. Camp Snoopy also features unique settings just for little ones including Peanuts Playhouse, a three-story interactive foam ball factory, and Snoopy Bounce, a giant, enclosed inflatable air mattress in which kids can jump and play. (Parents, bring your cameras, so that you don’t miss one of those inevitable “Kodak moments.”)

The show must go on.
I’ve never been disappointed with the quality of any of the live performances at Worlds of Fun. During the summer of 2009, you can choose from two different Rock & Roll revues, a musical tribute to the best in American music through the ages, and Mutt-allica, a sport and comedy show presented by the Clements and their beautiful dogs, all “rescues.” If you just take your kids to see one show at Worlds of Fun, make it Mutt-allica, because of the message it sends about caring for our beloved pets. It’s a heart warmer.

When you can’t bear to leave…
Worlds of Fun Village, just outside Worlds of Fun (and its next-door waterpark, Oceans of Fun) offers a variety of family-friendly accommodations, including cabins, cottages, and RV sites. You can spend your day enjoying the parks, then come back to Worlds of Fun Village in the evening to relax in the pool and outdoor hot tub. Summertime, and the livin’ is easy!

Author’s Note: This is the fourth in a series about Staycations in (or very near) Kansas City. Be sure to also read about Independence, MO, Harry Truman’s hometown; dining at Em Chamas; and escaping to the Kingdom of Narnia. Also read about affordable family fun at Worlds of Fun.
