Steve Rathje, candidate for the US House of Representatives (IA CD-2)
Steve Rathje, candidate for the US House of Representatives (IA CD-2)
Rathje for Congress, IA CD-2

We're seeing it in the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial races and the battle for Congressional District 23 in New York. The Obama "magic" has begun to fade and conservatives are preparing to take back all three of these seats, as more and more Americans see that the "change" Obama and his liberal allies are delivering, isn't the change they were promised. But this isn't the end of the story, it's only the beginning.

This weekend I travelled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to meet and go pheasant hunting with congressional candidate Steve Rathje, who's running for the U.S. House in Iowa's 2nd Congressional District and retired USAF General Jimmy Cash. Steve Rathje, like Florida CD-19 candidate Edward Lynch, is a self-made businessman, a man of honor and a true conservative. Like Ed Lynch, Rathje is running in a predominantly Democrat district, not because it's the easy thing to do, but because it's the right thing to do. As in Florida, Iowa is suffering from a loss of jobs and a lack of leaders that actually represent the people that elected them.

Likewise, General Cash is a conservative, a career military man that has spent his life serving and defending the United States and a man that has seen firsthand what happens to the military when a liberal president and a liberal Congress pay lip service to our brave soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines, but fail to properly fund them and provide them with the tools they need to do their dangerous jobs. General Cash, who flew jets from Vietnam to the 1980s, was the commander of an F-15 wing during the Carter administration. His squadron had to cannibalize parts from one fighter to keep the others flying. Without spare parts our state of the art fighters were little more than cool looking, life-size models. Jimmy Carter redirected needed funds from the military to liberal social programs and the results were disastrous.

Now the general says history is repeating itself. With the recent decision by Obama and the Congress to cut the F-22 program, our government is putting our brave pilots in unnecessary danger. The F-22 is the only fighter that can defeat the Russian's new surface-to-air missile system. This missile system will soon be deployed in both Venezuela and Iran. Congress in it's infinite "wisdom" has elected to go with the cheaper, and less capable F-35 "Joint Strike Fighter". The F-35 is intended to serve in the Air Force, Navy and Marines in three different configurations. All three configurations will be single engine fighters that lack stealth, "Super Cruise" (the ability to go supersonic without using afterburners) and are less nimble than the F-22. Navy pilots don't like flying single engine fighters over the ocean, for obvious reasons. The Air Force has used single engine fighters, like the F-16, but prefers two engines because the redundancy makes the plane safer. The Marine configuration will be a VTOL fighter, meaning it will be able to take off and land vertically and replace the aging Harrier Jump Jet.

Both Rathje and Cash know that if we don't take back control of the House (or at least cut deeply into the Democrat's majority) in 2010, the damage that will be done to our military and our nation may be irreparable.

That's why I'm bringing attention to, and supporting, a candidate in another state. That's also why General Cash, a man that while he wore the uniform didn't speak out about politics, has become a vocal conservative. General Cash along with his friends retired generals Paul Vallely and Tom McInerney has endorsed Steve Rathje and these men of honor are looking for other candidates around the nation to save our military and our nation from ruin.

In this dangerous time in our nation's history, conservatives need to look beyond their local districts and even their states. We need to support true conservative candidates, not just people with an "R" after their names. We've seen this weekend, in NY-23, that the person that calls themselves a Republican can be as liberal as any Democrat. "Republican" Dede Scozzafava, after dropping out of the race, endorsed the Democrat not the conservative candidate Hoffmann. Who do we have to blame for this? RNC chair Michael Steele, the NRCC, the New York Republican Party, former-Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and other so-called GOP leaders that endorsed this RINO candidate, that's who.

As I wrote in my last article, "Conservatives are taking back the Republican Party, across the nation, one district and one election at a time. If Michael Steele and the other "leaders" of the GOP don't get that message, they'll be left behind". So the message to conservatives is this: from West Palm Beach, Florida to Cedar Rapids, Iowa and all around this great nation... Conservatives Unite!
