There was a survey conducted in 2008, by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, it was said that 63% of American households have pets.
Many pets are used for therapists, healers, teachers and helpers.
Many animals can teach children loyalty, responsibility, sharing and how to love unconditionally.
There are several animal - assisted therapy programs, in which they visit hospitals and nursing homes. These animals are screened and their owner is trained to guide them the animal – human interactions. The patients that participate in this program usually experience improvement and enjoy the communication with the animal.
Many of them are used as healers in programs for the mentally ill. These animals provide as a sense of purpose and fulfillment and help people when they are feeling lonely and depressed. They are known to help people relax and overcome their illness. They help the people that suffer from stress and depression they make them feel a sense of happiness.
Assistance dogs provide people with physical and mental disabilities with a sense of independence. These dogs serve and their eyes, ears, and hands. They assist them by performing everyday tasks. Dogs are able to detect changes in their owners body language , behavior, and will alert them so they can seek a safe environment.
Also many elderly people may adopt a companion, either a dog or a cat. This way they are not alone, they give them a sense of encouragement to go on with their lives and gives them a reason for living. However it is wise to adopt an older dog or cat this way they don’t have to go through the puppy training and kitten stages. This way they are less susceptible to unpredictable behavior.
All these animals ask for in return is shelter, food, vet care, love and our companionship. Always remember when looking for a pet, go to the shelter first , there is always a pet there that is compatible for a loving family. They deserve love too.
