In this day and age it is illegal to abuse, torture or kill animals. There are several arrests for this in the news all the time. But the question is, Is it ok in the horse racing competition? Let’s see for every 22 races at least one horse suffers a severe injury. Studies show an estimated 800+ thoroughbreds die from race related injuries. However losing 800+ horses makes you wonder what number will be great enough that will move racing into the animal abuse category along with dog and bird fighting ?
Many of the thoroughbred owners are unable / unwilling to provide the expensive veterinary care that these horses need. Many of these horses are 2-3 years old , not full grown their bones are not fully formed. A thoroughbred is full grown at around 4 years old. However thoroughbreds were bred for running it is in their blood, they live for it and they love it. These horses are used for racing before their fully developed.
Let’s look at Eight Belles, fracturing both her front ankles. She was euthanized almost immediately on the track. This wouldn’t have happened if she was home hanging out doing what horses are meant to do, Which is not running 35 MPH for a mile and a half with a 105 lb human on their backs, and being beaten to run faster with a whip. Using pain in an effort to control an animal ia morally repugnant to anyone that respects animals.
Truthfully it is not only about horses, no animal deserve this, and no human should put them in a position where it can happen. An animal depends on its owner for affection, shelter, food, and companionship. Not to be put in a situation where they could be hurt or possibly even killed.
