It’s that time of year when leaves turn a mellow gold; some still with the specks of green and the trees just seem to put a beautiful show to warm our hearts as we sense the holidays draw near. There is so much positive available around us – that we can use to make good Feng Shui at Thanksgiving. This Chinese “art of living” has been around for over 3,000 years. It harnesses the positive energies around us, allowing us to bring more energy to our lives and bring you a new sense of purpose.

It’s important that the mood is festive. Good energy will lift everyone present. It is also believed that using a real tablecloth (not one made out of plastic or synthetic materials) helps absorb negative energy. Just like “living green”, good Feng Shui is about harnessing the elements that are natural and organic around us for a sense of peace and inner joy.

Shapes and the Thanksgiving Table
Round –shapes such as circles or even oblongs are supposed to promote an easy flow & continuity. The round shapes in the Chinese culture easily symbolizes money – like coins and that’s why even during birthdays, most Chinese women wear dresses with polka-dots. For the dining table, a round or oval shape is best, but not to worry if you have a rectangular table…the negative energy (believed to be much like arrows or darts) evoked by the sharp corners can be “dulled” by a bit of creativity using living vines or leaves, much like a swag of greens to drape over the edges of the table as part of the decor. This breaks the negative energy that is supposed to be sent out by sharp edges.

Centerpiece
Fresh fruits, gourds, corn in husks – they all symbolize abundance and fertility of good things to come (grapes are good- some Chinese always have them because “they symbolize coins - therefore attracting money”) and they make great centerpieces. The beauty of such a combination is that, you don’t need to be a master designer to make this look good. By just gathering them together using a decorative pedestal, basket, or horn never ceases to showcase its simple beauty that is a great accent to the table.

Bells
Bells have also been an important aspect of Feng Shui. In ancient times, they were used to drive away evil spirits. Present-day practitioners that use them are convinced that they change the vibrations of a room and elevate the energies of those present. While I know of some people that have a “mini-ceremony” before a meal during a special occasion with antique bells they brought back from as far away as Tibet–…the chimes that hang in your house near the garden will be enough to ring in abundance as it chimes gently swaying in the wind.

Seating Arrangement
An important detail is the seating arrangement. Harmony is easier achieved if your table is at the center of the room. It is suggested that the host is seated at the table strategically where he is in full control of his view but not in the direct pathway of the door. Mirrors are an important tool for Feng Shui. While the small mirrors are used in the front doors of millions of Asian households to ward of negative energies, it can be used well within the dining area since it multiplies the happy feelings from the thoughts that the Thanksgiving feast on the table brings to the whole family.

Using the art of Feng Shui to make any Thanksgiving dinner successful will not only bring joy to those we celebrate with. The positive feelings and happy thoughts will be a gift to those who will find comfort in the memories that were made during times of great challenges and loneliness, long after the holidays have gone and that - is when you know you succeeded for your Thanksgiving holiday.

Nature unites with good Feng Shui for Thanksgiving
The beautiful colors of nature and its bounty are part of the joy and hartmony are the easy ways we can acheive good Feng Shui specially this Thanksgiving.
