Day Four is in the books and as I prepare to check out the action from Day Five these are just a few thoughts from last night's action.
Matrix Resurrection – Shawn Marion had some of his best years with the Phoenix Suns playing with Hall of Fame caliber PG, Steve Nash. However over the last two years, Marion’s production has declined playing with the Miami Heat and the Toronto Raptors. This offseason, Marion was traded to the Dallas Mavericks and is now playing with another Hall of Fame caliber PG, Jason Kidd. Through the first two games, it looks like this was a great move for the Dallas Mavericks. During the game last night, Marion seemed to be back to his Phoenix form on his way to an 18 point, 6 rebound night. He also showed his versatility to guard multiple positions effectively on the defensive end. Although his production may not match his Phoenix days, Marion should still be a solid fantasy option, especially if he can add the defensive numbers that he has been known for throughout his career.
Trouble in LA Paradise – The Los Angeles Lakers acquired Ron Artest this offseason after winning the NBA championship last year. I was not a big fan of that move because I thought they sacrificed last year’s team chemistry and added an element of unpredictability. Well, so far that move has not paid dividends for the Lakers. Last night, Artest struggled with foul trouble and scored only 3 points in 23 minutes in the loss to the Dallas Mavericks. He started the season with only 10 points against the Clippers. The Lakers played both games without All-Star Pau Gasol and once he returns, the opportunities for Artest will decrease even more. Artest said all the right things prior to the season but how will he react if this type of minimal production continues?
Home Cooking for Jennings – Brandon Jennings debuted last night for the Milwaukee Bucks after spending last season playing overseas in Italy. Jennings was the topic of much conversation when he decided to play overseas instead of going to college after his graduation from high school. The jury was still out on whether that was a good decision or not. Well if last night was any indication, more players may make the same decision. Jennings finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists in a loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Even though he was only 7-16 from the field and had 5 turnovers, he still finished with a very solid NBA debut and will definitely be a solid fantasy option if that production continues.
Big Fantasy Nights – There were 13 games on last night’s schedule but a few players had nights that stood out above the rest. Steve Nash finished with 20 assists to go along with 18 points and 6 rebounds as the Phoenix Suns topped the Golden State Warriors. Orlando’s Superman, Dwight Howard, combined 22 rebounds with 20 points and 4 blocks in a win over the New Jersey Nets. Finally, even though his Raptors loss to the Memphis Grizzlies, Chris Bosh finished with 37 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks.
